How to repaint a vase using acrylic paints ? (DIY project of the day)- Let's get creative #1

How to repaint/paint a vase using acrylic paints?

It is actually rather simple. All you need is a brush and a tube of acrylic paint. I wouldn't recommend using water, there is no need for it. You will need water only to clean the brush (or you can use a sponge). The process itself is super simple: just apply the paint on the vase and wait for it to dry. Acrylic paints dry quickly, so you won't have to wait for long. It is one of the easiest DIY projects out there. However, here are some points considering these kind of paints that you want to have in mind, if you decide to follow along.

Benefits of using acrylic paint:

- it dries quickly,
- it is fairly easy to use,
- it can be applied to different materials,
- it can be used in a variety of ways.

Downsides to using acrylic paint:

- it can come off with time or when there is heavy handling involved,
- it may not look professional or very polished,
- it offers no or little protection ( for example if you want to paint something made from wood and preserve it at the same time, then it is better to buy a professional paint or vanish that also protects wood).

What happens when you want a white vase?

Recently, I decided that I need a white vase to match it with a white dinning table. This is what I came up with. I took one old vase (it was black originally) and just painted it with acrylic paint and voila- I got myself a new vase.  I actually wanted to still be able to see the black paint underneath, that is why I didn't put many layers of white paint. Now, I'm thinking about getting that completely white look, so I might change that (I will keep you updated).

You can use as many layers as you like (or just one), depending on the effect you're hoping to produce.  Remember to put something under the vase (like old newspapers or grocery bag) if you are worried about getting the work surface dirty. Acrylic paints should come of easily if you get them on your skin (I don't usually wear gloves when I use them), a bit of water and soap should do the trick. The same applied for your clothes, but just to be on the safe side, you can choose to wear old ones or put an apron on. Acrylic paints dissolve in water, so if you somehow get them on your clothes, wash them immediately and you should should be fine.

If you are interested in how to make a vase from an old shampoo bottle, you can check out this old post of mine. Similarly, you can refresh an old pair of shoes by repainted them with acrylic paints (here). As I said, acrylic paints are fairy easy to use. I hope that you enjoyed this little 'new vase project' post. Naturally, if you have a vase that is made from crystal, you will probably not go on and paint it over with acrylic paint but you might want to create an original art piece on it. The possibilities are endless and by no means stop at vases. There are many ways one can use acrylic paints.

  2. I love how you upgrade and make such endlessly pretty and original pieces from not so pretty old shoes and shampooo botles.
I never really thought much about redoing old stuff, cause I usually throw them away, but you gave me a creative urge to follow your advises now ^__^

  7. What a fantastic idea to refresh a vase using acrylic paint. Your vase came out really well. The combination of the paint and natural texture of the vase has a lovely weathered look.

  8. What a lovely design! The quick drying time must make acrylic paint an ideal medium to use, and I suppose it adds to the beauty of what you use it for - because, like you say, it's temporary and will wear away over time! This vase looks wonderful sat on your table, Ivana :) Have a brilliant weekend! :)

All your comments mean a lot to me, even the criticism. Naravno da mi puno znači što ste uzeli vrijeme da nešto napišete, pa makar to bila i kritika. Per me le vostre parole sono sempre preziose anche quando si tratta di critiche.
